Giovanni Battista Tiepolo “Glory of all Saints” Poldi Pezzoli Museum in Milan in Italy
Giambattista Tiepolo (March 5, 1696 - March 27, 1770) “Glory of all Saints”
Painting - Oil on Canvas (46.7 x 29.2 cm) 1733 — 1734This painting is a sketch of the canvas for the main altar of the Ognissanti church in Rovetta.
The work of Tiepolo in Ognissanti is entitled “The Madonna in Glory with the Saints”.
But in this sketch, we note the absence of the Madonna, supposed to rise in the clouds with the angels!
The title of this sketch by Tiepolo is “Glory of All Saints”, which corresponded to the initial commission for the Church of the Ognissanti, the church of all Saints.
Therefore, only later, the Madonna was “added” to the very top of the final table, in place of the three circles representing the Trinity.
On the left, dressed in blue and gold, Saint Peter raises his arm majestically, pointing to the sky; just behind him, Saint Paul contemplates the angels, one hand resting on the guard of his long sword.
At their feet, a praying bishop is kneeling on the steps.
Still in the foreground and behind the bishop, we see Saint Laurent (or Saint Andrew) and Saint John the Baptist.
To the right of Saint John the Baptist, a king dressed in white appears in deep meditation, probably King David, but some think it could be the King of France, Saint Louis.
