The Pinacoteca Ambrosiana Museum and its Ambrosian Library in Milan are undoubtedly one of the most beautiful museums in Milan, located in a beautiful palace close to the Milan Duomo.

Cardinal Federico Borromeo initiated the collections of this museum as early as the 17th century by donating works of art that he had acquired himself.

But one of the interests of Ambrosiana is also the fact that its creator, while insisting on the artistic part, also wanted to create an extensive library for Milan.

Vinci, Portrait Musician
A library that contains, among other things, a particular treasure: the “Codex Atlantico” by Leonardo da Vinci, which includes numerous drawings of machines, geometric studies, architectural drawings and other creations of the Florentine genius.

Leonardo da Vinci's other leaves are now preserved at Windsor Castle.

In this library, you can also admire the only male portrait ever painted by Leonardo da Vinci, the “Portrait of a Musician”.

The other treasure you can also admire at the Ambrosiana is Raphael's preparatory sketch, whose fresco is in the papal apartments, in the Signature room of the Vatican in Rome, the famous “School of Athens”.

A perfectly preserved sketch, almost three meters high and eight meters wide, from which Raphael drew the drawing of his fresco on the wall before painting it.

A wonderful painting by Botticelli, the “Madonna of the Pavilion” is also part of the Ambrosiana collections.

Finally, a painting full of symbols and meanings that revolutionized still life painting in its time, the superb “Fruit Basket” by Caravaggio.

Here, you can also admire the works of many other great names in painting, such as Titian, Tiepolo, Bassano, Vivarini, Bernardino Luini and Bramantino.

And for romantics, know that here, enclosed in a glass relic, is a long lock of blond hair that belonged to Lucretia Borgia.

A relic that made the Ambrosiana travel to admire it, princes and kings, just that!
