Saint Catherine

Lorenzo Lotto (1480 — 1556) “Saint Catherine of Alexandria”

Painting - Oil on Wood (36 x 29 cm) 1550-1560

Saint Catherine is represented leaning on one of the instruments of the various tortures that will be inflicted on her, one of the cogged and studded wheels that were supposed to tear her body by turning in the opposite direction.

But an angel came and smashed the wheels.

Saint Catherine
The cogged and broken wheel became the symbol of the virgin martyr, represented here dressed in rich garments corresponding to her title of princess.

She most often wears a crown, but Lorenzo Lotto was content with the wheel and princely garments, the halo and the palm as an attribute of martyrdom.

The saint's face is very soft under the delicacy of her hair.

Still, her eyes stare at us, showing a specific determination supported by her faith, which gave her the strength to resist the advances and then the threats of Emperor Maxentius without trembling.
