Francesco Guardi “View of San Marco Piazzetta and San Giorgio Maggiore Island in Venice” Poldi Pezzoli Museum in Milan in Italy
Francesco Guardi (October 5, 1712 - January 1, 1793) “View of San Marco Piazzetta and San Giorgio Maggiore Island in Venice”
Painting - Oil on Canvas (48.5 x 84 cm) 1745 — 1760Guardi shows us Piazzetta San Marco in Venice on a sunny day with strong shadows on the right side of the canvas.
The Venetians do their business there; some talk to each other, and we see a few small dogs.
In the background, on the left, you can see the island of San Giorgio Maggiore with its basilica and bell tower and, on the right, the island of Giudecca with the Redentore church with a bell tower that no longer exists on the left.
On the left is the Doge's Palace with a gallows, which no longer exists.
This bracket was used to lift packages directly from the Piazzetta.
To the right and in the shade, you can see the Sansovino Library, which casts its shadow over two-thirds of the square.
